April to June

April to June is one of the best times to visit Switzerland for multiple reasons most of the winter snow has melted, the ski slope crowds have left, and the summer crowds have yet to arrive. This typically means cheaper accommodation and airfare.

These months are best for avoid hikers who want to see Switzerland covered in wildflowers, especially at Lake Lugano and Ronco Sopra Ascona.

Come May, it’s also a wonderful time to try Swiss wine at one of the many local wineries who open their doors for locals and tourists alike. This practice is called “caves ouvertes” or open caves. July to August

The best time to visit Interlaken is during the summer, from July to August. The temperature lingers around a pleasant 18°C to 20°C. It is the perfect time for aimless walks, trekking, mountaineering and adventure activities. The famous William Tell festival is held throughout July and August when around 250 folks dress up in medieval attire to stage Schiller’s famous play. It has been performed here every year since 1912

Summer in Switzerland is by far the country’s busiest season and the minute you arrive, you will understand why.

The weather is sunny and ideal and the flowers are out in full force. Because conditions are so perfect and tourists flock overseas, prices can go up to 50% higher in the mountains. Don’t let this deter you book in advance and you’ll likely snag a great deal.

Summer also means the festival season for Switzerland.  Switzerland’s biggest open-air music festival, Paleo in Nyon, and the world-famous Montreux Jazz Festival both take place in July. In August, Zurich is taken over by the Street Parade a giant techno party. 

September to October

September is when the crowd starts thinning and the days start shortening. But the weather is still pleasant and you can enjoy the tourist sights conveniently. This is also the time when you can catch the grape harvest. 

There’s something magical about Switzerland in the fall. Vibrant fall colors take over the mountain slopes and the temperatures get mildly chilly, though still warm during the day. All of the summer crowds have gone back to school and work, making it more affordable once again.

Some of the highlights include visiting Interlaken to see the beautiful Jungfrau, taste wine the grapes are harvested in the fall making for a delicious bottle, hiking the mountain trails, sampling fondue in Gruyeres and paragliding in Lake Thun and Lake Brienz.

November to March

Winters are freezing in Interlaken and many tourists tend to avoid visits from December to March for this reason. The minimum temperatures can plummet to -2°C. That said, skiing enthusiasts throng the region to indulge in adventure activities near the Jungfraujoch region. Also with such few tourists, it’s a great time to find deals on hotels and flights. You have to carry enough woolens to bear the cold and it’s advisable to wear layered clothing.

Winter in Switzerland is both high and low season. Quite the contradiction.

Many of the resorts outside of the ski towns close down while the ski slopes are wide open and full of tourists riding the fresh powder. This is especially true around the holiday season when Christmas markets open up. Some of the most popular markets to head to are located in Montreux and Basel.

Surprisingly, come January, temperatures drop more which brings more snowfall.

This means it’s high season for skiers but don’t fret if that’s not your thing Spots like Ticino (near the Italian border), get little, if any, snow. You can also stick around to enjoy the International Balloon Festival in Chateau-d’Oex in January or enjoy the three day Fasnacht festival that takes place at the end of February and early March.

Transportations around Switzerland

By Air

The closest airport to Interlaken is Bern Airport, 45 minutes away by road and about an hour and a half by train. You can also take a flight to the Zurich Airport and then a train from the airport to Interlaken. Zurich is connected to all international flights and is a little over two hours away from Interlaken by train.

By Bus

There are direct private buses from Rome, Paris, Florence and Munich to Interlaken. Some bus services offer sightseeing around Interlaken as well.

By Train

Interlaken has two stations  Interlaken OST (East) and West stations. The West station is closer to town. It is well connected to the rest of Switzerland and even some parts of Europe including Paris, Berlin, Milan and Salzburg. A train journey into Interlaken is very scenic and memorable.

Road/Self Drive

The interstate highway from Zurich to Interlaken is approximately 117 kilometers and excellent to drive on. The overnight parking charges in Interlaken are, however, high. We suggest you take the train for travelling to Interlaken. You can bank upon the most efficient rail system in the world, the Swiss Rail, to travel from and within the city.

Visit the capital 

Bern Bern has an amazing historic town center that you’ll want to walk around all day long. This part of town is filled with medieval clock towers, cobblestone streets, churches, and well-preserved sandstone homes. Be sure to walk the River Aare way, visit the History Museum and the Einstein Museum, and check out the bears at the Bear Park.

Ski the Matterhorn 

The Matterhorn’s sharp angular peak is one of Switzerland’s most iconic attractions. You’ll have to take a train or bus into the Zermatt area the closest town to the mountain as cars aren’t allowed. Not only do you need to ski here, but you can come to admire what’s truly a pollutant free area. And, if you miss ski season, come hike the mountain in the summer.

Join in the Fasnacht Spring Carnival

This festival in Basel is a three-day party that welcomes in the warm weather and takes place annually on the Monday following Ash Wednesday. It’s something that’s highly anticipated by both tourists and locals, and it’s definitely Switzerland’s most popular festival. Fasnächtlers dress in elaborate costumes to hide their identities and parade around town with “cliques” bands playing basler drums and piccolos. All the bars and restaurants in town remain open throughout the entire three days. Everyone here is in a good mood.

Lake Geneva

As the third largest city in Switzerland, Geneva offers spectacular views of the city’s lake Lake Geneva, the world’s largest fountain, the UN, a historic city center, and a collection of international restaurants to satisfy anyone’s palate. While you’re here make sure you check out the Geneva’s Art and History Museum or the Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum. There are 40 museums here in total.

Hike Mt. Pilatus

Located right outside the city of Lucerne, this beautiful mountain has breathtaking views of the alps. From the city, you can take a cable car to the top or better yet hike its trails to the top to look out over the Swiss Alps. There are some easier trails around the northern side of Pilatus, as well as other attractions in the summer months such as a ropes course.

Picnic at the Rhine Falls

Pack a picnic lunch and look out at your view of Europe’s largest waterfall. If you hop on a boat tour you can get extra close to the giant rock in the middle of the falls, and you’ll also experience the Rhine Falls Basin. Nearby in the town of Schaffhausen, you’ll find a medieval castle which also houses a hostel for cheap but interesting accommodations.

Explore St. Gallen

The seventh largest city in Switzerland, St. Gallen boasts beautiful museums, colorful murals, and one-of-a-kind architecture. It doesn’t receive as much tourist traffic as the other cities and regions around the country, but it’s a fun town full of students and you’re likely to befriend a few locals during your visit. Must-do: visit the Baroque cathedral and the Abbey Library, which is home to nearly 170,000 documents. Some are hand-written and over a thousand years old!

Visit the Graubunden area of the country, where you’ll find villages with houses dating back to the 13th century. Here they also speak an ancient language called Romanch, which has died out everywhere else in the country and the locals take great pride in keeping the tradition alive. Of course, it’s a haven for nature lovers – there are 615 lakes and 150 valleys in the region. Visiting here is a true Swiss Alpine experience.

Have a romantic time in Montreux

With a picturesque castle Chateau de Chillo lying at the edge of a lake, this area makes for a pretty romantic destination. Tour the castle, which dates all the way back to the 12th century and inspired the likes of Lord Byron, Mary Shelley, and more. The town was also the home of Freddie Mercury and there is a statue here in his honor. 

Discover rural culture in Appenzell

This small village of 7,000 lies in the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden. There are no cars and the village has upheld much of its local traditions and culture, including dance and folk music. It’s an incredibly picturesque little town, with frescoed buildings and narrow alleyways. Its location near the foot of the Alpstein mountains makes it a great gateway for participating in summer and winter outdoor activities, like hiking and skiing. Take the Appenzell Railway to Wasserauen, and explore the fascinating prehistoric Wildkirchli caves.

When you are ready to hit the town, head to Neiderdorf in the Old Town or Langstrasse just nearby for some of the best clubs and bars in Zurich. Cinchona Bar and Olé-Olé-Bar are two fun options.

At the restaurant Blindekuh which means “Blind Man’s Buff” in German you eat in the dark. Founded in 1999, this restaurant became the first dark restaurant to employ visually impaired staff in the world. Eat with only 4 out of 5 senses here and have a culinary adventure.

Walk the lake promenade

The Lake Zurich promenade was created around 1800 and goes around the entire lake. From Bellevue, the boardwalk goes for about two miles three kilometers along the lake towards Tiefenbrunnen, and it’s always busy with walkers, cyclists, and inline skaters. About halfway, at Bürkliplatz, you’ll find a peaceful meadow for relaxing on a sunny day, as well as an outlook terrace. If you’d rather mingle with the locals, pause and chat with some of the jewelry sellers or street artists.

Go skiing

Flumserberg is the nearest large ski-resort. Retreat to the right side of the resort if the rest gets busy. Cross-country ski and night runs are available, as well as a sledging run. if you go later in the day or if you only use certain lifts. There are other nearby ski resorts too, like Sattel-Hochstuckli and Amden, but Flumserberg is the closest.

Visit the Beyer Zurich Clock & Watch Museum

Switzerland is famous for its watchmaking. The museum has one of the best collections in the world and tells the history of timekeeping from 1400 BC to today. Take a gander at all of the timepieces housed in this well-designed museum, and be sure to pay attention to the one-of-a-kind, rare, and antique clocks. 

Celebrate Swiss National Day

If you happen to be around on August 1st, Swiss National Day celebrates the founding of the Swiss Confederation in 1291, and festivities are carried out in the evenings and fireworks are launched at night. Watch them over the lake, or if you have experience with (safely) launching fireworks yourself, you can buy them in the days leading up to the national holiday. The display over the Rhine Falls (one hour away by S-Bahn) is also extremely popular. No matter where you are in the city, you’ll find houses and buildings draped in the Swiss flag and other colorful bunting, while families and friends take advantage of the holiday to gather in parks and public spaces for barbecues and picnics.

Take a boat tour

Take a boat tour on Lake Zurich and bookings can be made at the pier on Bahnhofstrasse. Tours/cruises just get more elaborate from there, with a variety of themes such as cheese fondue cruise, folklore cruise, a brunch cruise, and even a build-your-own-burger cruise. 

Check out the Rietberg Museum

For a day of international art, head to the Rietberg Museum which contains collections from around the world, including Asia, Africa, and Oceania. Admire Indian miniature paintings, swiss masks, and ceramics from the Meiyintang collection. Other highlights include a shaman eagle mask and Persian wall hangings. 

Rosenhof Market

This seemingly hidden market in a square in the Niederdorf part of the Old Town, is perfect for picking up little souvenirs and trinkets. Go here to browse through shops selling intriguing goods like incense, jewelry, handicrafts, and bohemian style clothing. When you’re here, be sure to get some international food from one of the many delicious food stalls.

Take a Limmat cruise

From April to October, you can cruise down the city’s main river on a small boat, and take in Zurich’s Old Town from a new perspective. The boats have been specially designed to navigate underneath Zurich’s seven city bridges, and you’ll get to see sights like historical guild houses, and Town Hall. 

Wander around Bahnhofstrasse

Bahnhofstrasse is renown for being one of the priciest shopping streets in the world per square metre, and the entire route is covered in high-end shop fronts featuring international luxury brands. If you’re backpacking, you’re probably not shopping on this pedestrian street – but it’s fun to people watch and see how the other side lives. If you’re here in December, be sure to come check out the elaborate Christmas decorations lighting up the entire area.
