Whether it's North Goa or South Goa, my travel blogs got covered for both parts of the Portuguese corner of India.

Although Goa is best known as a beach destination, there’s plenty more to the beauty of Goa than coconuts and cocktails. Think of Goa, and think of a coastal retreat with sights of gleaming sands and azure waters with a shimmering sun in the backdrop. A lush green landscape edges the golden coastline, which overlooks the scintillating seas in the beach capital of India. Although the smallest state in the country, Goa is one of the nation’s biggest tourist destinations.

Important information about Goa India

Currency in Goa India

The official currency Goa India is called Indian Rupee INR. also you can exchange your country currency on airport and take Indian Rupee.

Language speak in Goa India

The official spoken language of Goa is Konkani, followed by Hindi, English, Portuguese, Marathi, Urdu, and Kannada. Due to the Portuguese rule in Goa that lasted for over 450 years, the state hosts people of various regions, ethnic races, and religions from India and abroad. Another reason that Goa is a great place to visit for tourists is because of how widely spoken English is, making it a very accessible place to visit for tourists from around the country.

Religion and Culture in Goa India

A small state on India's western coast, Goa has always benefitted as a trade centre because of its easily accessible ports. With a beautiful harmonization of the East and West, Goans have taken the best of both worlds. A civilization of warm, happy people, Goa sees a mix of different religions like Christians, Catholics, Muslims, and Hindus that live together in harmony. Following their age-old traditions and customs, Goan's celebrate all major festivals with fervor without bringing any religious barriers within the society.

Best Time To Visit and Climate in Goa India

High Season November to March

Expect day after day of dry and warm weather. It is seldom uncomfortably hot or humid because of soothing coastal breezes but may be a little chilly for some after dark, so pack a light jumper. During the peak times of the peak season mid December to mid January hotel rates double and train and plane tickets should be booked way in advance.

Shoulder Season April, May, and October

A good time to come because tourist numbers and hotel rates are markedly lower than the peak months. While temperatures rise a little in the lead-up to the wet season, it’s still dry in April and May, but the monsoonal rain may linger into October.

Low Season June to September

Avoid the monsoon because it will rain heavily almost every day for hours and streets will get water-logged, possibly affecting travel plans especially by train. What’s more, cyclones are prevalent at this time, so always be alert. The only redeeming features are the lack of tourists and dramatic drop in hotel rates, but note some hotels and tourist facilities and attractions, including national parks, may close for some or all of the low season. The best time to visit Goa in November to between February.

Transportation around Goa India

Goa has plenty of public and private options for travel, depending on your budget and preferences. Public transport options include an extensive network of privately owned buses linking major towns to villages, which also run between villages. Hired transport options include pre booked taxis, auto rickshaws, taxi bikes, cars, scootys and bicycle rentals, as well as privately booked chauffeur cars.

Also if you can travel by air Dabolim International Airport to the nearby city of Vasco da Gama approximately 25 minutes, from where you can find connecting buses to Margo for beaches in South Goa and Panjim for beaches in North Goa. The bus stop, or more accurately, the place in which you can flag down the bus, is a spot on the main highway to the right side of the exit doors. When you step out of the airport, head right and keep walking downwards towards the highway. When the public road begins, immediately turn left and you will see a few public buses parked, all going to Vasco

Travelling by local bus in Goa is without a doubt the cheapest option. Buses connecting to and from the more urban areas of Goa are plentiful, straight forward to use and the majority of the time they run as per their schedule. And once you know how to use them, they are also the funniest option as you get to have a good old chat with the locals. Buses that run between local villages, however, are less frequent and don’t always run on schedule.

If you are looking for comfort and practicality and have that extra cash to pay, these are your best options. However, it should be known that travel by private taxi or auto rickshaw is the least cost-effective way to travel Goa as there is no metre system, meaning drivers can charge what they like and they do. Officially, the fixed price allotted by Goa’s government for rickshaws per km and for cabs, however this is most often not followed and not enforced. Both taxis and auto rickshaws can be pre booked, alternatively, you can flag down an auto rickshaw when needed.

If money is not an issue or if you want the complete freedom to travel as and when you like, then renting a private car with a driver is a good option. including your own driver, a private car and fuel. Most drivers are hired on a per day basis so unless you are planning to spend a full day sightseeing, then you’re better off using a pre paid taxi service to drop you off where you need to go.

Top Things you can do in Goa India

Basilica DE Bom Jesus in Goa

Goa India

Saint Francis Xavier Womb

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a church in Old Goa, extremely popular throughout the Roman Catholic world. One of the most important attractions here are the mortal remains of the missionary Saint Francis Xavier. The grand interiors will leave you awestruck the moment you enter.

Beaches

Goa has well over 25 amazing beaches ranging from the full-of-life party destinations to the serene and peaceful ones. North Goa offers sprightly beaches like Baga, Calangute, Anjuna and Arambol, that necklace the northern coastline with tons of shacks buzzing with life, serving lip-smacking delicacies from the Konkan cuisine with cocktails and mocktails to go along Goa’s beaches make your holiday experience complete.

South Goa is rather mellow, with serene beaches like Colva, Palolem and Galgibaga famous as a nesting ground for Olive Ridley turtles which are cut off from the world, but really worth paying a visit if you are looking for some peace and quiet.

Chapora Fort

Chapora Fort first Bollywood movie got noticed in the Dil Chahta Hai. This ancient fort in North Goa offers splendid views of the adjoining Vagator beach and overlooks the Arabian Sea from all angles. The fort is located on top of a hillock with slopes on all sides, and though it is almost in ruins now, it doesn’t stop visitors from standing where Bollywood stars once did.

North Goa

North Goa’s coastline is packed with resorts and backpacker enclaves what used to be hippy hangouts Goa’s early days have largely been replaced by not so hip but cheap tin shacks. Bars, shops selling dream catchers and spiritual music, next door to pizza joints line the beaches. one thing is for sure Chances to experience local Goan culture are limited in most of the northern resorts.

Panjim (Panaji)

Goa India

Vagator Beach Goa

Panjim is sometimes overlooked by travelers in favor of the beach, but we loved taking a day to wander and explore the old Latin quarter of Panjim Fountainheads. Here the colored houses, galleries and neat streets whisk you away to another continent where the Portuguese history and influence is clear.

Whether you have just a few hours or a few days in Panjim, we found that Panjim has plenty of charm. Take time to wander around Panjim’s Fountainheads pausing for photos of the colourful buildings and sip a fresh lime soda on one of the cafe’s balconies away from the hustle and bustle of the streets. The Gallery Gitanjali at the Panjim Inn is home to a wide range of art works from international painters.

Panjim has it’s own beach Miramar beach but you probably won’t want to go for a swim here given the amount of shipping traffic that heads past into Panjim port. Instead, it’s a nice spot to watch the sunset.

Mangueshi temple located halfway between Panjim and Vasco de Gama, is Goa’s most famous and one of its busiest. The main temple is dedicated to Bhagavan Manguesh, an incarnation of Lord Shiva. The temple complex is over 500 years old.

South Goa

South Goa is the original part of Goa that we fell in love with for its lush paddy fields, laid back vibes, and occasional hidden corner of empty beach. Whether it stays that way remains to be seen beaches such as Palolem and Agonda are already well established on the tourist map and although they may be quiet compared to the madness at Calangute Palolem.

We loved waking up to the sounds of the birds in the mangroves in this peaceful spot that is really a unique place to stay in Goa. Netravali Wildlife Reserve Tanshikar Spice Farm.

Spice Farm

You may come across plenty of offers of spice tours during your time in Goa, but a visit to Tanshikar Spice farm is truly something different. Located beyond Netravali Wildlife Reserve, we were lucky enough to meet the owner and have him show us around his organic farm and garden. The main house is a traditional Goan house built with mud and bricks, and a working example of the perfection of simple living without AC  in modern times.

The farm offers tours, farm-to-table lunches do not leave until you have had one of their fresh cacao smoothies, and for those who want to stay longer, you can even book a stay in one of their rooms or tree houses. Don’t expect Wi-Fi or TV, a stay at Tanshikar offers the opportunity to disconnect from the outside world and re-connect with nature.

Trekking in South Goa

There are a number of beautiful treks in Goa which take you inland and to the best vantage points to enjoy some of this beautiful state’s natural scenery. One popular trek is to the Dudhsagar Waterfalls famous for its pictures of trains passing dramatically close to the falls. The falls themselves are at their fullest flow in September October just after rainy season and slow to a trickle in the winter months.

There are hiking trails in Netravali Wildlife Reserve, as well as various other waterfall treks including the Pali Waterfall Trail and the Sonal Waterfall Trail.

 Water Sports

Goa India

Surfing in sea Goa

Diving, catamaran sailing, jet skiing, parasailing and windsurfing keeps your heart racing as you test the waters and let out the adventurer in you. There are plenty of water sports operators in Goa, especially in North Goa, and you can identify them by the herd of water scooters and boats parked in one corner of the beach.

Go on a dolphin spotting cruise

Dolphin watching tours are a popular activity in various parts of the Mandovi River and are especially popular at Sinquerim beach alongside Fort Aguada. Operators gather tourists in groups of 4 or 6, who hop on to a boat and venture out about a couple of kilometers into the sea to watch the dolphins circling in action.

Casinos

A visit to one of Goa’s several casinos should be on your to do list as Goa has some exceptional avenues to put your stakes on. The casinos feature several games like slots, roulette, poker, flush baccarat and more along with live entertainment and occasionally unlimited food and drinks. Even if you’re not a big gambler, cruising on the high seas is a great way to relax. Some casinos you can head to are Caravela a one of its kind floating casino, anchored on the Mandovi River in Panjim, Casino Carnival Goa Marriott, Miramar and Casino Royale a floating casino on the Mandovi River in Panjim.

Why you should visit Goa India at least once?

Goa is one of the nation’s biggest tourist destinations in India. Tourists typically know Goa as North and South Goa the former being the place to be if you’re looking forward to a happening holiday, and the latter, if you need a more relaxing respite from your hectic lifestyle. Whether you’re planning a family holiday, a quick weekend getaway with friends or looking to spend some cherished moments with that special someone, Goa has all the ingredients for a perfect holiday recipe.

Goa’s interiors are rich in biodiversity and wildlife where they haven’t been threatened by development as much as on the coast, but increasingly development is posing a threat. Goa is home to six national parks and wildlife sanctuaries, stretching from north to south. as some of the wildlife sanctuaries seem to be little more than zoos, with animals kept on chains. Beautiful Netravali Wildlife Reserve.

Goa is overloaded with tourists just coming to hang on the beach. There’s nothing wrong with hanging on the beach but when you come to Goa, do your bit to learn about the rich Goan culture, too. Try a spice plantation tour, kayaking in Goa’s backwaters, or a chance to sample the local feni .Consider lesser known destinations in Goa or exploring inland.

While one facet of Goa is the tireless insomniac revelry, the other is a laid-back, old-world charm that Portuguese brought along in the 17th century. The churches, bungalows and cafes will excite you no less, if no more than sipping a refreshing drink by the beach. Old Goa has its own appeal, and it never fails to entice. Showered with numerous beaches facing the majestic Arabian Sea, Goa has more than enough to make you fall in love with it.
