Another one of a kind experience that people can have here is visiting the turtle hatchery where you can see these babies entering the cycle of life and play with them all day long or go for whale watching in the Indian Ocean. There are various places in Sri Lanka where people can have fun. One such place is Chilaw. There is way too much to see and things to do in Chilaw.

Best Time To Visit and Climate in Sri Lanka

The best time of year to visit Sri Lanka depends on where you wish to travel to for a relatively small island, there are wide variations in climate, depending on the time of year. There are two monsoons that affect the island’s climate the north east monsoon which can affect the whole island, and the south-west monsoon which is less intense and impacts the south and west coasts as well as the Hill Country. Despite the rainfall, the temperature around the coast rarely drops below 25 degrees up in the Hill Country it is a little cooler due to the higher altitude. Generally, the best time to visit the west and south coasts as well as the Cultural Triangle is between December and April, while on the east coast the climate is at its finest from May through to October.

The nation experiences the distinct seasons of dry and wet. In understanding Sri Lanka’s climate, one would have to familiarize themselves with its monsoon periods south western monsoon and north eastern monsoon. The former brings rain to the south western region of Sri Lanka, between the months of May and November, and remains dry from December to April. The latter brings rain to the north and eastern coastal regions of Sri Lanka, between the months of October and January, and remains dry from May and September. so overall best time to visits in Sri Lanka in month of December to April.

Transportation around Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is a quite small country island where the distances between the sights are relatively short, making it an easy country to travel in.

The main airport of Sri Lanka is called Bandaranaike International Airport or Colombo International Airport. It is located north of the capital Colombo, in the Negombo suburb. All international flights arrive at this airport.

There are two ways to get from Colombo International Airport to your next destination in Sri Lanka by taxi, car or bus.

If your first destination is on the west south coast of Sri Lanka, your driver can take the new high speed road Colombo Katunayake Expressway. It links the airport with Colombo city, If you had a long flight and is exhausted, consider spending your first night in Negombo city, which is only a few minutes drive from the airport. Negombo has a beautiful beach and several excellent hotels.

The new expressway is linked to the popular coastal cities along the south west coast, like Bentota, Mirissa, Galle, Unawatuna, and Hikkaduwa, Southern Highway.

Public buses leave from the airport ever 15 minutes to the central bus station in Colombo. It drives via the expressway and the travel in times.

Sri Lanka is a rather small island and with the new modern expressways, travel times are shrinking. Domestic flights in Sri Lanka are quite limited, so for public transportation, you can choose between train and bus which are both cheap but slow and not that comfortable.

The most efficient and convenient way to get around Sri Lanka is by hiring a private car and driver, or for shorter distances to take a taxi or Tuk-Tuks.

The most popular and comfortable way to get around Sri Lanka is by hiring a private car with a driver. You can book a car and driver from just one destination to the next, or for the whole or part of your Sri Lanka trip.

The drivers usually have excellent local knowledge and will tell you about sights, exciting places to see, things to do, hotels, and restaurants. So often the drivers are just as much a local guide as a driver.

The train is an excellent and cheap way to see the beautiful scenery of Sri Lanka. Especially the routes Kandy Ella or Nuwara Elisa, Colombo Kandy, and Colombo Galle are stunning and highly recommended.

The only thing is that the Sri Lankan trains are very slow and often delayed, so if you are short on time, you should not rely on trains as your primary transportation to see Sri Lanka. I recommend that you do a mix of train and hiring a private car driver.

Stilt Fishermen of the South

The traditional method of fishing in Sri Lanka involves balancing on a wooden rod in the ocean to get your catch. Nowadays, it has become much more of a tourist attraction with men posing and wife's collecting ‘donations’. I kept driving past these shows and found a lonely spot further along the coast where a couple of fishermen with no watchers were still practicing this beautiful method.

Submarine Yard

In the north of Sri Lanka the remains of the this secret military tourist base for the Tamil Tigers has recently surfaced as one of the more odd tourist attractions.
